Thought For The Week

Thoughts on today's readings

"How often I wish that God would give me the resources to take people 'out of their world'; out of homelessness, jails, nursing facilities, cycles of abuse or addiction. And yet, he doesn't! Instead, he tells me to go into their world and be present through the despair." Jerry Goebbels.

In today's gospel Jesus speaks of sending his apostles out into the world. This begs the question: Do we come to church to find God or do we look for God at work in the world? Perhaps both. We come to church to be strengthened, nourished and resourced so that we can find the courage, confidence and power to be for God in the world. We come to church to worship God and to internalise his teaching and to be reminded that, however grim things look, God is God and the lords of the world are not. We go out with this message of hope.

First Reading: Acts 1. 15-17, 21- end.
The Gospel: John 17. 6-19.
